Why weight matters
A focused explainer for hawk weight management
Hawk weight management is the daily practice of matching a bird's condition to safe, responsive flight. Falconers often begin with a known fat weight, then identify a lower flying weight where the hawk is keen, alert, and still physically strong. A hawk flying weight calculator can organize those numbers, but it cannot read the bird for you. Weather, species, molt, muscle, recent feeding, stress, and health all change the picture. Use the range above as a planning note, not a rule. Record morning weight consistently, compare it with field behavior, and move slowly when changing rations. If a bird seems weak, dehydrated, unusually hungry, or off its normal response, stop and seek experienced or veterinary help. The best logbook combines scale readings with appetite, casting, keel feel, flights, and outcomes over many days. Over time, those patterns make every target more personal and every adjustment easier to justify.
